An extra liability layer on top of your auto, home, and other policies. Inexpensive for the protection it provides.
An umbrella policy sits on top of your underlying auto, home, watercraft, and recreational vehicle policies. If a claim ever exceeds your underlying limits, the umbrella picks up the rest, up to a million or more in additional coverage.
The math is simple. A serious auto liability claim in Virginia can easily exceed $500,000 in medical bills, lost wages, and pain-and-suffering. Most homeowners carry $300,000 to $500,000 in underlying liability. Without an umbrella, the gap comes out of your assets.
An umbrella also extends defense costs (legal fees the carrier pays to defend you) and certain claims your underlying policy will not touch, like libel, slander, and false arrest. A $1 million umbrella typically costs less than $30 a month.
